President’s Message - February 2012
Despite inclement weather, there was a large turnout to the January HCNC Monthly Meeting. While the original booking of the Oliver Woods Community Centre restricted us to a single-room space, we were able to procure the adjoining room at the last minute. The extra space was much appreciated for the 75+ members in attendance, who signed up for a wide variety of activities and enjoyed time to welcome new members and renew old friendships.
For the remainder of the fiscal year, through June 2012, we will continue to have the larger two-room space for the monthly meetings. With that confirmed, Ted, the Club Vice President has secured two interesting and informative speakers for the February and March meetings. On February 20th, Ernie, an HCNC member who is a Driver Education Instructor, will speak on the topic of aging and how to keep our driver's licenses. Having heard many of the anecdotes and stories of Ernie’s experiences as an instructor and license assessor, we anticipate an entertaining (as well as instructional) evening, with time for HCNC members to ask questions and/or address concerns.
On March 19th, the featured guest speaker will be David Hill-Turner, the curator of the Nanaimo Museum. David will speak on the history of Nanaimo, which should be of special interest to those who have moved to the city recently. By the way, if you have not been to the Nanaimo Museum downtown, it is certainly worth a visit. There are excellent displays on various aspects of the history of the Harbour City, as well as useful information on what the city has to offer those who have chosen to live here - not to mention a great gift shop!
A committee made up of representatives from both the HCNC and its Alumni has been busily engaged in a much-needed updating and revision of the HCNC Constitution and By-Laws, particularly with regard to recognition and inclusion of the recently formed Alumni. We anticipate that a report from the Committee will be presented to the HCNC and Alumni Executives and full memberships this spring, hopefully with final acceptance and adoption prior to the Annual General Meetings in June.
As the daylight returns and the days lengthen, we hope that your experience in the Club and participation in, and support of, its many activities enrich your life in the Nanaimo area.
With personal best wishes,
Caleb
President
